How to Calculate and Estimate Tiles Needed?

This post is about how to calculate the number of tiles you will need for your project. The first thing you should do is measure the square footage of the area that needs tiling.

Once you have this, use a formula to calculate how many square feet of tile are needed per linear foot and multiply by 12 inches for an approximate number of square feet.

For example, if a room has a floor space size of 100 ft2 and it needs to be tiled with 3×6 inch tiles, then it would take 36 tiles at 5 sqft/tile or 144 sqft total.

If there are any rooms that need different sizes or shapes then those calculations must be done separately as well as added together before figuring out what type and amount of materials.

How Does a Quantity Surveyor Helps to Tile Calculate?

Quantity surveying is the art of economic and commercial building services engineering. It has its origins in the construction industry, but it is now increasingly acknowledged that quantity surveying can play a valuable role in other sectors too.

quantity surveyors are involved at every stage in the construction process; from project inception, through design stages to completion – quantity surveyors are even involved in the legislation process.

They have a vital role to play in seeing that the costs of construction are brought down through efficient use of resources, less on-site disruption, improved building services performance, and more effective project management.

A tile calculator is essential in the planning stage of laying your tiles. It’s all very well buying beautiful tile, but if you get it wrong and end up spending more money than you need to, then that would be a waste of your hard-earned cash.

All too often people get caught out with this kind of mistake because they don’t put enough thought into their tile purchase before going ahead and buying them.

So how does a quantity surveyor helps to calculate tile? The first thing you will do is decide on what size room you are going to tile and select a tile that has a similar-sized appearance as the tile you are using for your room.

You will need tile of similar size even though tile is sold in certain tile dimensions because most tile has a random width and height which means the height difference between two tiles might be different; therefore, it’s necessary to choose a tile with the same height.

How to calculate tiles needed for a floor

  1. Measure the area of your floor by taking a piece of string and measuring out the length and width
  2. Divide that number by 27 to get the square footage
  3. Multiply that number by 12 to find how many tiles you need for an average-sized room
  4. Add 10% extra tiles if you want to make sure there are enough leftover in case of any break during installation or because not all tile pieces will be perfect squares
  5. To calculate how much grout you’ll need, divide the total square footage by 4 (since it’s going on each side)
  6. Find a calculator online to help with this calculation!

How to calculate tiles needed for a wall

  1. Determine the length of your wall
  2. Measure the height of your tiles
  3. Multiply your answer for step 2 by the answer from step 1 to get the total number of tiles needed for a wall
  4. Divide that number by 12 to find out how many rows you’ll need to install on one side of the wall before turning and installing them on another site (so, divide by 6 if you want two rows)
  5. For each row, measure down from the top until you reach desired height, then multiply this measurement times the total number in a row (i.e., use 100cm if you are using 10cm tall tiles)
  6. Add up all numbers obtained in step 5 to determine the total amount of tiles needed for the entire project

How to calculate tiles needed for a roof

  1. Calculate the area of your roof
  2. Determine the size of tiles you need
  3. Multiply the two numbers together to find out how many tiles are needed for your roof
  4. Divide this number by 50 or 100, depending on whether you have a square foot or square meter roof, respectively
  5. This will give you an approximation of how many bags or boxes of tile are needed for your project and can be used as a guide when purchasing materials from a retailer like Home Depot or Lowes
  6. To calculate more accurately, divide the area in square feet by 144 (the number of square inches in one square foot) to get an approximate measurement in inches and use that figure instead with step five above to determine how much tile is needed for your project

How to calculate tiles needed for a room

  1. Estimate the square footage of the room
  2. Measure from floor to ceiling and multiply by two
  3. Divide this number by 144 to get the total tiles needed for a single row
  4. Multiply that number by how many rows you’ll need in your room, then divide it again by 144 for an estimate of how many tiles will be needed overall

How to calculate tiles needed for a bathroom

  1. Calculate the size of your bathroom
  2. Find out the number of tiles you need per square foot
  3. Multiply that number by the total square footage for your bathroom to find how many tiles you need
  4. Divide that number by 144 (the number of tiles in a box) and multiply it by 36 (the number of boxes needed to cover one wall) to figure out how many boxes you’ll need
  5. Add those numbers together and divide them by 2, because half your tile needs will be used on each side of the room
  6. Do this math for all four walls and add up the final numbers to get an accurate estimate of how much time is needed

How to calculate tiles needed for a kitchen

  1. Calculate the area of your kitchen
  2. Divide this number by 12 to get the square feet
  3. Use this number to calculate how many tiles you need by multiplying it by 4
  4. Round up or down if necessary, but make sure you have at least one extra tile in case any are damaged during installation
  5. Multiply that number by 10 for a more accurate estimate of how much material is needed
