What skincare products do you need based on your skin type?

Your skin is the protective barrier against environmental changes such as cold, sweat, dust, and dirt. It keeps the body safe from these aggressors by responding in a certain way which leads to different conditions like acne, blemishes, pimples, pigmentation, etc.

A proper skincare regime would help in keeping this protective barrier healthy and glowing but it’s not the one shoe fits all formula. You can choose skincare products only when you know your skin type and understand your needs.

Here is a short and comprehensive skincare guide for every skin type.

1. Dry to Normal Skin

These two skin types are mentioned together because their skincare regimes mostly have the same types of products. They need healthy moisture to prevent the skin from drying out which can be done by

  • Oil-based face wash

Because oils are loaded with beneficial ingredients that help in repairing the skin by preventing it from drying out. The best face wash for dry to normal skin types is any cleanser with coconut oil or a combination of different oils.

  • Face and body oil

It can also be replaced with a thick serum but the approach needs to be individualistic. Especially in winters, body oil or a thick serum is the most useful of all skincare products for these skin types.

  • Exfoliator

A scrub can either be physical or chemical. Depending on your skin condition, you can opt for physical scrub with exfoliating beads which gives instant results. Or you can use a chemical exfoliator that gives long-lasting results after several uses.

  • Sunscreen

Any form of sunscreen would work for these low-maintenance skin types. But that does not mean your skin can tolerate any harsh product. The best sunscreen for face and body is the one with antioxidants derived from healthy sources.

  • Thick moisturizer

To lock the well cleansed and scrubbed skin, a thick and healing moisturizer is what you need. Just get any oil-based cream and you are good to go.

2. Oily to Combination Skin

These skin types are naturally moisturized by sebaceous glands but require anti-bacterial skincare products to protect them from clogging and microbial build-up.

  • Oil-free face wash

Oils would only give more coats of moisture so for these skin types the best face wash is the one with the right consistency that neither strips the skin of natural oils nor makes it shiny with excess oil production.

  • Gentle exfoliator

A chemical exfoliator is best suited for these skin types as it is usually gentle than a physical one.

  • Serum or gel

Consistency and texture matter a lot when choosing a serum for shiny skin types. Face and body gels are the best picks but you can use light and quick-absorbing serum too.

  • Light sunscreen

These skin types are most prone to breakouts when a thick layer of product is applied. So choose a sunscreen that absorbs quickly and has some percentage of antibacterial and oil-controlling compounds in them.

3. Acne-prone Skin

Oily and combination skin types are mostly acne prone too. And it is a big issue for which a deeper insight into skincare products is needed.

  • Oil-free face wash

It can be creamy or gel-like but it needs to be light and watery. Also, it must have antibacterial properties to kill acne-causing bacteria in the skin.

  • No scrub or gentle scrub

Gentle scrubbing is good for mild acne. However, severe acne would only get worse with exfoliation.

  • Antibacterial serum

It’s all really about chemical composition. You can opt for any serum with Salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, or alpha hydroxy acids in it. Few drops of tea tree oil can serve as a natural serum for acne-prone skin.

  • Clarifying cream

As the term suggests, acne-prone skin needs moisturizer with clarifying components that kills acne and pimple-causing bacteria and keep skin healthy.

  • Light sunscreen

Harsh metal complexes can easily irritate this skin type. So opt for a light sunscreen with a healthy antioxidant ratio.

4. Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin shows irritation, itching, or rash as a response to using a bad product. That’s why the skincare products for this skin type need to be very specific.

  • Gentle cleanser

Face wash of any consistency which does not have harsh or strong chemicals in it works for sensitive skin.

  • Hydrating oil or serum

Hydration is necessary for all skin types but sensitive skin needs it more to keep positive skin homeostasis. Therefore, hydrating serum or oil is a must-have.

  • Lightweight moisturizer

It should not be strongly fragrant and should absorb quickly.

  • Gentle exfoliator

Microfoliant scrub is the best face wash and an exfoliator for sensitive skin as its beads are very tiny than normal scrubbing beads and usually dissolve on applying.

  • Be careful with sunscreen

It’s very hard to find a perfect sunscreen for sensitive skin types. However, you can try an organic one or one with no fragrance and a negligible amount of preservatives.
